5.09 - Pie - Review

What Happened This Week? Production began on Smokejumpers; Andrew Klein made his debut on the show, ending with selling his company and slowly earning the life he never had back.

The Funniest Line? Obviously the new slogan for Entourage: "Love that!"

What I Liked?
Production will continue next week, rather than being rushed into one episode this week. We'll finally see the evolution of a film from start to finish on the show. Unlike Medellin, I have a strange feeling that this film could be something special.

We also saw the introduction of Gary Cole. It's too early to tell if he'll be worth having around for the entirety of the sixth season, but he didn't do bad tonight.

How about that dinner confrontation, too? Way to stick up for Turtle, Vince.

What I Didn’t Like? Despite the laughter he caused, Jason Patric didn’t do much for me. A little annoying, a little brash. I'm still waiting to see what will transpire next week. Will the line stealing continue or will Vince finally win out?

Funniest Cameo? Where have you been, Stellan Skarsgard? Definitely the shocker of the night. He wasn't much of a loon, to be honest, but still freakishly frantic.

Verdict?
Certainly the best episode of the season. Loved the cutting between the vehicles as Vince became increasingly nervous about the first day of shooting.

What’s Happening Next Week? Emmanuelle Chriqui is back; Seth Green is pissing off Eric once more; Ari and Lloyd give Andrew Klein a makeover.

Really? You didn't think the production aspect added a certain vibe?

I lived this week's episode. I enjoyed the onset scenes much more than on Medellin. My review:

The title of this week's episode of Entourage refers to the Banana Cream Pie that Jason Patric stole from Vincent Chase's (Adrian Grenier) sidekick Turtle (Jerry Ferrara). But, ultimately, it refers to a lot more......

Vincent Chase lived in a Hollywood that handed him everything when he first made it big. He had his piece of the pie and then some. One might even say he had his cake and ate it too.

Along with his Entourage (Kevin Connolly's Eric Murphy, Kevin Dillon's Kevin Dillon, and the aforementioned Turtle), he had Hollywood on a silver platter.

But, alas, no more.

In an industry that used to spoonfeed this hot celeb with a silver spoon, Vince has found himself the recipient of sloppy seconds. And, worse yet, the hand that feeds him has basically told him he is unworthy of his own portion, let alone extras.

It was made more than apparent that Jason Patric, not Vincent Chase, is the star of "Smokejumpers". From the trailer, to the "stolen lines", plus the director's fear of losing Patric, it was made abundantly clear to Vince that he was second banana on this film.

Can we trust the director that Vince will shine in the 3rd act, during his "big scene"? Maybe. It would definitely seem that he has a vision, and is marginally less crazy that Billy Walsh (note marginally).

And, I really do feel that Vince is learning valuable lessons this season that will serve him well in years and seasons to come. I think doing this movie will put him back on track and, who knows, a Best Supporting Actor role may be in the table for this once headliner. How sweet would that be?

Right now, Vince needs to concentrate on eating his Humble Pie, and getting back on every directors' menu in Hollywood. Then, he will get his just desserts again!!

Well, here I go with more detail on what I did not like...

I liked that they were on the set, but Vince being so insecure and acting like this was his first film did not feel right... even if it has been a while since his last film, he still did Aquaman. He has experience with major directors and huge sets. This is not a first for him. Yes, he is secondary now to Jason Patrick (which seems dumb cause I do not see Jason Patrick drawing much of an audience to any movie theatre these days), but I also remember him being insecure in the Aquaman set because of Mandy Moore, which affected his work.

Also, I realized its almost the end of the season already and Turtle is doing the same stupid things he's always done. I thought his character would go somewhere. And Drama, he is a big TV star, or was the first couple of episodes, and now he is back to following Vince around and acting like a total douche.

Eric's career are manager is also non-existent now for several episodes. Where is Charlie? He did absolutely nothing this season. And the writers? Shouldn't they be on the set? It's their script.

On the other hand, Ari and Lloyd are always great, and the introduction of Gary Cole was not much, but it has potential.

I was actually very curious as to why the writers weren't on set -- especially when rewrites were delivered to Patrick.... from who, exactly?

His career really isn't non-existant as much as it is on the backburner. He's trying to help Vince.

Remember when the PA delivered lines to Jason Patric's trailer? I got a little suspicious at that point. It seemed at that point like he was just delivering the lines that were being delivered to him.
The writers, remember, are Lukas Haas and Giavanni Ribisi. We're not talking big names with big clout here. They were given a sweet deal to buy their script. In a lot of Hollywood stories, writers never see their actually script hit the big screen as they wrote it. You have to be a bigtime screenwriter to have any say in how you words are translated and delivered in movies.
One of the first things I learned in college (I have a BFA in Writing, Literature and Publishing) is that they will take your words and twist them and change them until you're not even sure you wrote the thing. And, you'll just be glad you see your name at the end of the credits (still a pipe dream of mine!)

definitely wouldn't call it the best of the season, but next week looks promising.

In a season that has only had two really good episodes,(the two previous to this one), this was easily the worst of the season. They are concentrating too much on story and not enough on the comedy aspect of the show. This show is great when those two are in balance. This season seems to be leaning more towards drama than comedy and I think the show is suffering because of it.
Also I think the best line of the episode was when Jason Patric made the crack about not wanting to do sequels involving water. A very subtle shot at the bomb that was Speed 2.

I think too many people expect this show to be completely funny week in and week out. Granted, it is a comedy, but you still have to have some type of story line. If you go back to the past seasons, not every episode was completely hilarious. I think this episode was great for the season and I think it started building story lines for Season 6.

Reasons why this episode was "amazing"...

Reason 1: the first time on set of a new film in a long time.. which is just a great feeling overall.

Reason 2: okay there was way too many funny moments and parts that kind of made you go like "whoa what the fuck man!"... which is totally a good thing... cause i mean even though the director and jason patric were huge assholes.. they created a lot of drama for the episode... plus points!!

Reason 3: Learning more about Ari's past and rise to current status... which i realized would love to hear about some more and unravel more little things about Mr. Gold himself.

Reason 4: I know we get new characters in almost every episode... but the new characters they introduced this week seemed like very interesting/important characters that will play important parts/roles in the future episodes to come

okay i'm finished.
